Ardbeg Single Islay Malt – Eight of the Best

Posted on 09 February 2008

Ardbeg Whisky has always been ranked very highly here at Online Whisky Shop so much so that we have decided to put together our eight top single malts from the Islay distillery which we believe everyone should try if they can.

In no particular order –

Ardbeg 10 Year Old

ardbeg 10 year old

Ardbeg 10 Year Old is a distillery bottling which many say is their personal favourite.

This is a highly complex mix of malt and peat with the characteristic sweetness which brings back memories of best treacle toffee. If you like a touch of peat then this is a must have malt!

Strength: 46%
Bottle Size: 70cl
Chill Filtered: No
Price: under £30

Ardbeg 17 Years Old

ardbeg 17 year old

Ardbeg 17 Year Old is the whisky which started the revival of the distillery following its acquisition by Glenmorangie and its reopening in 1997 after sixteen years of silence.

This exhibits an exquisite balance of peat and sweetness which is very rarely achieved and should be savoured. Stocks are getting low however so don’t wait too long!

Bottle Size: 70cl
Price: £125

Ardbeg Lord of the Isles

Ardbeg Uigeadail

ardbeg uigeadail

Ardbeg Uigeadail, named after Loch Uigeadail one of the distillery’s two water sources is a bit special having spent time in both bourbon and sherry casks prior to being bottled at cask strength.

Uigeadail is strong but rich with more than a hint of liquorice and lime and a finish which is both subtle and intreaguing. A must for Ardbeg lovers!

Strength: 54.2%
Bottle Size: 70cl

Ardbeg Very Young for Discussion

ardbeg very young

Ardbeg Very Young is the first new output from the distillery under its new owners Glenmorangie and following its reopening in 1997. Very Young was vatted in 1998 and bottled in 2004 as a six year old, and it is the first of three bottlings made prior to the new spirit reaching its tenth year. For the enthusiast this will give an insight into how the spirit matures over time.

This malt is highly peated but smooth with a hint of chocolate and iodine and being bottled at cask strength it warms the cockles of your heart. This is now rare so don’t miss out!

Strength: 58.9%
Bottle Size: 70cl
Chill Filtered: No
Price: £235

Ardbeg Still Young

ardbeg still young

Ardbeg Still Young is the second of a triumvirate of introductions of the new Ardbeg malt prior to it maturing for a full ten years this time as an 8 year old bottled in 2006.

The presence of peat and smoke with a hint of chocolate and peach leaves a pleasant aftertaste. This is slightly smoother than the ‘very young’ but is still robust and peaty. Again it is disappearing fast – so it’s a steal at this price!

Strength: 56.2%
Bottle Size: 70cl
Chill Filtered: No
Price: under £33

Ardbeg Almost There

ardbeg almost there

Ardbeg Almost There the third and final instalment of the triumvirate now 9 years old in 2007 and again bottled at cask strength.

As we expected this is more complex and a little smoother than the other two – still of course with the peat but with a hint of fudge and chocolate mixed in with the sea and a touch of lime. Again it is disappearing fast – and sure to be good value!

Strength: 54.1%
Bottle Size: 70cl
Chill Filtered: No
Price: under £30

Ardbeg Kildalton

ardbeg kildalton

Ardbeg Kildalton 1980 is an unusual but exceptional malt. An Ardbeg malt without peat can you believe it?

The result of a commission to make a batch of unpeated whisky for a third party which fell through we have the Kildalton and boy is it good. A nose of mint and apple becomes a pepper ginger feast like dying and going to heaven. This is very well balanced elegant but bold.

Not a lot of it about so its not cheap but it sure is a treat.

Strength: 57.6%
Bottle Size: 70cl
Price: £450
